SIS Smart Irrigation Sensor

Granular matrix sensor with linear output signal.

The SIS is a combination of the well-known Watermark(R) granular matrix soil moisture sensor type 200SS and a special amplifier which offers a fully linearised and temperature compensated DC-voltage output signal. The amplifier uses a new, patent pending technique for the accurate measurement of the sensor element.

The linear voltage signal reduces the efforts for the electronic measuring equipment and cable connections.

The temperature compensation directly picks up the soil temperature. Thus, the otherwise problematic temperature difference between logger and sensor is avoided.

An extended version features a programmable digital alarm signal for irrigation issues and a serial interface for bus linking and temperature read-out.

NEW: integrated temperature sensor with improved accuracy of ±0.1degC

Th2 Soil Temperature Probe

The durable, water proof temperature probe for soils, fluids, gases.

The thin body and sharpened tip reduce the soil disturbance when installed and ensures a good thermal contact to the soil. A heat conducting filling inside improves the thermal conductivity from the casing to the probe - for a fast response punctual temperature pick-up and minimised cable temperature influence.

Pic 2

Th3 Soil Temperature Profile Probe

To measure the temperature profile in soils in six fixed depths.

Inside a tube made of glass-fibre reinforced plastic (GRP) 6 temperature sensor elements are placed in different depths (see figure). Each sensor element has direct contact to a 1 cm high stainless steel ring which is embedded into the tube. This ensures that each sensor has direct contact to the soil.

The 6 sensors are placed in the depths 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 and 100 cm according to the requirements of the WMO.

The probe is completely inserted until the top of the tube is on a level with the ground surface. The probes cable will exit the tube in a depth of 8 cm and should be buried completely below the ground surface. This prevents that the cable picks up the ambient temperature and readings are falsified. The Th3 cable is inserted in a plastic protection tube to prevent rodent bites. Connecting cables should also be inserted in protective tubes.

The standard version Th3-v has analogue output signals 0 to 1 V corresponding to -20 to +50°C. Each depth requires an individual logger channel, thus 6 channels need to be available. Note that supply minus is conducted through the cable shield. The Th3-v can be connected directly to the PR1/2 plug of the DL6 6-channel logger.

GB-1 Gypsum Blocks

The KS-D1 Digital Soil Moisture Tester, used with the GB-1 Gypsum Soil Blocks, make up a valuable system to monitor the soil moisture available to the plants.

The blocks are made of gypsum, cast around two concentric, stainless steel electrodes. They are manufactured under controlled conditions to obtain a maximum degree of uniformity and fast response to soil moisture changes. The GB-1 measures 7/8” dia. x 1 1/8 “ in height. It is the most widely used sensing unit, easy to install and especially suited for extensive sampling of soil at various depths.

Pic 2

Gypsum Blocks and Watermark

The soil moisture meter can be used in combination with soil moisture blocks. The soil moisture content is determined by measuring the resistance between two electrodes inside the gypsum blocks. The condition for reliable measurements is the optimal contact between sensor and soil. The gypsum blocks are permanently buried in the soil at the desired depth. Once buried there the blocks have a life of 3 to 5 years (depending on the type of soil). The meter is practical and is constructed in sturdy synthetic material. It has a measuring range of 0 - 100% for 3-100kPa. It is a system that provides an indication as to when irrigation is required. To achieve a series of soil moisture measurements the sensors can be connected to a datalogger.

Pic 2

Trase

The Trase system is a complete (modular) measuring instrument for measuring and storing moisture data applying the TDR-technique. The open system allows for different cards to be built-in and makes the instrument suitable to meet future requirements. The instrument can be supplied in two different designs, with or without built-in multiplexer controller card. The meter features a measuring range of 0 - 100% volume percent moisture and is supplied inclusive wave guides, connector, battery and charging equipment.

Soil Moisture Sampling

Soil moisture sampling is the sampling of soil moisture in the unsaturated zone of the soil. there are mobile systems and setups with a permanent location for continuous sampling. Depending on the purpose of the research it is possible to select between samplers in which the sampling is done via a thin pes tube or via ceramic, glass or plastic cups. All samplers are available in various diameters and designs. With these soil moisture samplng systems the soil moisture is extracted directly and undiluted from the soil.

Pic 2

Thetaprobe

The Thetaprobe soil moisture sensor measures the soil moisture volume percentage by applying the Frequency Domain technique. The Thetaprobe measures the soil moisture volume percentage by measuring the changes in the dielectric constant.

The sensor is able to measure within a measuring range of 5 - 55 volumetric moisture content with an accuracy of 5% with standard calibration and only 2% with soil specific calibration.

Pic 2

Mini Trase Kit

The MiniTrase uses Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) to measure instantaneously the volumetric water content of soils and other moist media. A variety of connectors and waveguides for depth measurements ranging from 15 cm to 70 cm are available, and can be used in a portable manner or permanently installed for periodic moisture monitoring. The volumetric moisture content is displayed on the Palm terminal, and the graph of the TDR pulse can also be tagged for identification and stored for later viewing and analysis on the PC. All stored data can be transferred either by hotsyncing the Palm to your PC or via an RS-232 port connection from the MiniTrase to the PC. The MiniTrase unit is designed for rugged field use and is environmentally sealed to prevent damage to sensitive electronic components.
